Mikumi is one of the remarkable parks of Tanzania’s Southern Circuit, often described as a smaller version of the Serengeti due to its open plains and abundant wildlife. Its vast horizons and thriving animal populations make it an excellent safari destination, with frequent sightings of elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions, and hippos.
The park shares its southern boundary with the Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve), and together they form a unique and expansive ecosystem teeming with life.
Beyond wildlife, a visit to the area offers cultural encounters with the Maasai people, easily recognizable by their striking red shúkà (traditional robes) and innovative sandals made from recycled motorbike tyres. The Maasai are an indigenous ethnic group inhabiting Northern, Central, and Southern Kenya as well as Northern Tanzania, and their traditions, dress, and lifestyle make for an enriching cultural experience alongside your safari.
